China, May 16, 2026 - Kenya’s Reynold Cheruiyot delivered another major performance on the international stage after finishing second in the men’s 3000m at the opening 2026 Wanda Diamond League meeting in Shanghai/Keqiao, narrowly missing victory in a thrilling finish.
Cheruiyot crossed the line in an impressive 7:26.11, just behind Germany’s Mohamed Abdilaahi, who won the race in 7:25.77 after a powerful late surge over the final lap.
The race was one of the standout distance events of the opening Diamond League meeting of the season, featuring a world-class field that included Jacob Krop, Timothy Cheruiyot, Andreas Almgren, Edwin Kurgat, Birhanu Balew, and several other elite athletes.
From the early stages, the pace was aggressive.
The lead group remained tightly packed through the opening kilometers as the pacemakers pushed the field toward a fast time. Several athletes attempted to position themselves near the front entering the final laps, but it quickly became clear that the battle for victory would come down to Cheruiyot and Abdilaahi.
Cheruiyot looked strong throughout the race and briefly appeared capable of taking the win after making his move approaching the bell lap. The Kenyan accelerated sharply entering the final 400 metres and opened a small gap on parts of the chasing pack.
However, Abdilaahi responded brilliantly in the closing stages.
The German distance runner produced a powerful finishing kick over the final straight to edge past Cheruiyot and secure victory by less than half a second in one of the closest finishes of the evening.
Despite narrowly missing first place, Cheruiyot’s performance represents another significant milestone in the rapid rise of one of Kenya’s brightest middle-distance talents.
The 20-year-old has continued building momentum over the last two seasons following his emergence as one of the country’s most promising young runners. He previously won gold at the World U20 Championships before transitioning successfully into senior competition.
More from Kenya
His time of 7:26.11 is also among the fastest performances of his career over the distance and underlines his growing versatility beyond the 1500m, where he has already established himself as a serious international contender.
For Abdilaahi, the victory continues an impressive period of progress for German athletics.
The 27-year-old has steadily developed into one of Europe’s strongest long-distance runners, with strong performances across the 3000m, 5000m, and 10,000m disciplines over recent seasons. According to World Athletics, Abdilaahi entered the Shanghai meeting ranked among the world’s leading distance athletes and arrived in strong form after several impressive performances earlier this year.
The Shanghai/Keqiao meeting marked the official start of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League season, which features 14 meetings before the Diamond League Final in Brussels later this year. The event attracted many of the world’s biggest athletics stars, including Faith Kipyegon, Karsten Warholm, Letsile Tebogo, and Shericka Jackson.
Kenyan athletes were once again heavily represented across multiple events in Shanghai, continuing the country’s strong tradition in middle and long-distance running.
Cheruiyot’s performance will especially encourage Kenyan athletics fans ahead of the major championships later in the season, with the youngster continuing to show that he belongs among the world’s elite distance runners.
Although victory narrowly slipped away in Shanghai, the performance confirmed something important.
Reynold Cheruiyot is no longer simply a promising young athlete, and he is becoming one of Kenya’s leading hopes on the global stage.
