Qatar, 8 December 2025 – The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) announced on Monday that it had signed a $1 million grant agreement with Qatar Charity to provide emergency assistance to communities affected by severe drought in Somaliland.
The project will support around 9,000 households, including internally displaced families, by improving food security and sustainable access to clean water, QFFD said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Somaliland, like other parts of Somalia, is facing severe drought following below-average Gu rains between April and June, with concerns that the upcoming Deyr season may also bring little or below-average rainfall, further worsening conditions for pastoralist and farming communities.

The announcement follows meetings between Qatar’s Ambassador to Somalia, Abdullah Bin Salem Al-Nuaymi, and Somali leaders to discuss humanitarian support and development cooperation.
Al-Nuaymi met with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi ‘Irro’ on Wednesday, and with Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre in Mogadishu on Sunday to review ways to address the drought’s humanitarian impact and continue Qatar-backed development projects in Somalia.
