Somalia, 17 April 2026 - Puntland State on Thursday called on Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to convene an urgent consultative meeting to resolve disputes over the electoral process, amid growing political uncertainty.
Puntland said the call follows concerns over what it described as a looming constitutional vacuum, after the expiration of the federal parliament’s four-year term, adding that the presidential mandate is also nearing its end. (Somalia's federal parliament amended the 20212 Provisional Constitution and is still uncertain whether parliament's term will be extended)
A statement issued after a cabinet meeting in Garoowe stressed the need for immediate consultations involving the federal government and member states to reach a consensus on the electoral framework.
Puntland has boycotted the National Consultative Council (NCC) meetings since 2023 following a political dispute with the federal government, and has not participated in several subsequent meetings.

The call comes as Somalia faces intense political debate over the upcoming electoral model, with stakeholders holding differing positions.
