Somalia, 27 April 2026 Puntland briefed European Union and Swiss Development Cooperation Agency on the worsening drought, the regional humanitarian ministry said.
The discussions took place during a meeting in Garowe on Sunday between Puntland’s Humanitarian Affairs Minister, Abdinasir Yusuf Haji, and representatives from the European Union’s humanitarian arm (ECHO), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and Save the Children, according to a ministry statement.
Officials outlined the impact of prolonged drought on communities, including effects on livelihoods, livestock, water availability and food security, the statement said.
They also highlighted challenges facing internally displaced people and rural populations, as well as pressures on health and education services.

Puntland said it had requested additional support from partners to respond to the situation.
Around 1.5 million people in Puntland are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, based on ministry assessments, it said.
The Horn of Africa has faced repeated drought cycles in recent years, straining resources and increasing humanitarian needs across the region.
