Italy, 11 September 2026 — Seven Somali migrants reportedly killed at sea between Libya and Italy have been buried in the southern Italian city of Bari.
According to Somalia’s state broadcaster, SNTV, the seven were among 55 Somalis who died after the boat carrying them capsized while attempting to cross the Mediterranean.
The report said five of those who died were women, while two were children.
Members of the Muslim Somali community in Bari took part in arranging the funeral, and the seven victims were laid to rest in the city.

The exact date and time of the boat’s capsizing have not yet been officially disclosed. Somalia’s state broadcaster has not provided further details about when the incident occurred.
The reported deaths have once again highlighted the dangers faced by people attempting to reach Europe through irregular migration routes across the Mediterranean, particularly those travelling from North Africa towards Italy.
Irregular migration remains a major issue affecting Somalis, particularly young people seeking employment, economic opportunities and better living conditions abroad.
Data from international organisations shows that thousands of migrants travel each year along dangerous routes linking the Horn of Africa, North Africa and Europe. Those using these routes face serious risks, including death at sea, abuse, detention and harsh living conditions.
