Ethiopia, 23 December 2025 - President William Ruto on Tuesday arrived in Ethiopia for a one day working visit, the office of Ethiopia's Prime-Minister has confirmed.
Dr Ruto arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday morning where he was officially received by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
"Prime minister Abiy Ahmed has received Kenyan president William Ruto who came to Ethiopia for a one day working visit. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed welcomed Kenyan President William Ruto for a one day working visit this morning," the Office of the Prime Minister-Ethiopia said in a Facebook post.
The visit follows a notably busy period for President Ruto. On Monday, he attended a major cultural event in Baringo County and presided over the high-profile Kimalel goat auction, a traditional occasion that draws significant local attention in which together with friends, the raised KSh 82 million within just some 15 minutes.
In the preceding weeks, President Ruto had travelled to the United States, where he witnessed the historic signing of a peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda to end conflict in Eastern DRC.
The ceremony, overseen by U.S. President Donald Trump, marked a significant moment in regional conflict resolution efforts.
President Ruto had also been in neighbouring Uganda, where alongside President Yoweri Museveni, they officially commissioned the new Devki Steel Mills, a major industrial development expected to boost economic activity and employment in the East African region.
The working visit to Ethiopia underscores President Ruto’s active engagement across the continent and beyond, as Kenya continues to play a prominent diplomatic role in both regional and international affairs.
The discussions with PM Ahmed are expected to cover trade, security, and cross-border cooperation, especially building on the already strong relationship between the two nations.
More from Kenya
Kenya and Ethiopia, two of East Africa’s most influential neighbours, have in recent years intensified bilateral relations through frequent high-level visits and sustained dialogue.
These engagements reflect a shared commitment to regional stability and economic integration, particularly in the Horn of Africa, a region facing complex security and humanitarian challenges.
Speaking recently to ENA News, Kenya’s outgoing Ambassador to Ethiopia, George Orina, described the relationship between Nairobi and Addis Ababa as both strategic and enduring.
He noted that the two countries have consistently played a leading role in promoting peace and stability across the region, often working together through regional frameworks and diplomatic initiatives.
“Kenya and Ethiopia have been vanguard states in promoting peace and stability within the region,” Orina said, highlighting their cooperation on security and mediation efforts.
The latest visit by President Ruto is widely seen as a continuation of this close engagement, aimed at consolidating existing partnerships while exploring new areas of collaboration.
Officials from both sides are expected to hold brief consultations on regional priorities and bilateral programmes before the Kenyan leader departs later in the day.
It is also expected that Dr Ruto will have engagements with African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
