Kenya, 23 December 2025 - The government will launch large-scale disarmament operations in 60 days in the conflict hit Tana River County where scores have died in recent weeks following inter-clan conflicts.
Announcing the impending process, Coast Regional Police Commander Nunow Dubat gave an amnesty period of 60days to locals with illegal firearms to surrender them to the State.
The tough talking regional police boss warned of unspecified consequences for anyone found with illegal weapons after the expiration of the amnesty period.
Nunow at the same time sent a chilling message to politicians whom he said should stop inciting communities against each other, confirming that they have already arrested four politicians.
“If they are desperate for votes that they are inciting communities against each other, then they should look for elsewhere, not Tana River,” said the tough talking regional police boss.
Conflicts pitting two clans in Tana River have left scores dead for the last one year with the last three weeks escalating to unprecedented levels.
The government moved last week in its bid to quell the tension by arresting several ward representatives suspected of inciting and fanning the violence.
“We will still go for the financiers, mobilisers and inciters of this violence and criminals themselves moving around with illegal firearms, we will not leave any stone unturned,” he added.

“If you have 60 days of firearm use we have given you, if we find you have a firearm that you have not surrendered, we will deal with you according to the law,” noted the regional commander.
Nunow assured residents of their security urging them to give reconciliation a chance.
The police boss warned people he claimed to be outsiders to keep off affairs of the county, noting that they have leaders who can mediate for a lasting peace.
He was referring to a group of elders who have been moving around for reconciliation efforts.
“If they are peace committees or politicians, they should not come here. There are elders and leaders who can mediate between the two clans and come up with solutions,” he noted.
