Djibouti – Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh took part on Tuesday in a virtual meeting of African heads of state discuss the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
The meeting reviewed the current state of the outbreak and measures needed to contain its spread, particularly in the eastern DRC provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.
According to Congo’s Ministry of Health, as of June 14th, the number of confirmed Ebola cases had reached 782, with 181 deaths. A total of 56 people have recovered.

African leaders discussed strengthening health screenings at borders, contact tracing for people who had been in contact with patients, and disease monitoring to prevent the virus from spreading to other countries in the region.
The meeting was attended by the presidents of Burundi, South Africa, Botswana, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea and Zimbabwe, as well as African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
