Ethiopia, 18 June 2026 – More than 29,000 students began grade eight certificate examinations in Ethiopia’s Somali Region on Thursday, state broadcaster SRTV reported.
Somali Region Vice President Ibrahim Osman Farah and regional education bureau head Mohamed Sheikh Aden formally launched the examinations at Shabsaale School in Jigjiga.
A total of 29,631 students from 704 schools are taking the exams at 113 centres across the region.

Students from rural schools were brought to district centres, a measure authorities said was intended to reduce cheating and prevent the theft or unauthorised distribution of examination papers.
Education officials said candidates had received additional lessons during the school year to enable them prepare adequately for the exams.
