Kenya, 12 July 2026 - One person was killed and 14 suspects arrested following separate incidents of political violence in Kisumu and Nyahururu on Sunday, prompting the National Police Service (NPS) to warn politicians and their supporters against disrupting lawful political activities.
In a statement, the NPS condemned the violence, saying the incidents undermined citizens' constitutional rights to assemble peacefully and participate in political processes.
According to the police report, in Kisumu, a violent confrontation between two rival groups left one person dead and several others injured.
Police said the clashes also saw nine motorcycles set ablaze and a police vehicle damaged before officers moved in to restore order.
"Following swift police intervention, eight suspects were arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment in court. Efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved are ongoing," the police said.
In a separate incident in Nyahururu, police arrested six people after a group allegedly attempted to disrupt a political rally by pelting stones at participants.
Several members of the public sustained minor injuries during the chaos, including Joseph Gitau, who suffered a chest injury. Police said he was treated and discharged.
The NPS dismissed claims circulating on social media that police had opened fire during the incident, maintaining that no shooting occurred.
"Police responded promptly and arrested six suspects, who have also been placed in custody pending arraignment," the statement said.
The police service warned that anyone involved in political violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful gatherings would face legal action, regardless of their political affiliation or social status.
"No person, regardless of social status, political affiliation or public office, is above the law," the NPS said.
The service said investigations into both incidents are ongoing and pledged to conduct impartial, evidence-based inquiries to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.
The incidents come as political activity intensifies across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election, with security agencies warning against violence and urging political leaders to ensure their supporters conduct campaigns peacefully and within the law.
