Somalia, 21 April 2026 Oman and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) cleared a new livestock quarantine site in Puntland's Mudug region Monday as meeting global standards.
The Omani delegation was led by Dr. Salim Sulaiman Rashid, an expert from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, while IGAD was represented by Dr. Yahannes Girma Maheri and Dr. Dominic Lokeris Kathaya from IGAD-ICPALD, a center focused on rangeland and livestock development.
During the visit, the founders of the facility briefed the delegation on its operations, after which they toured various sections of the quarantine center, which has been developed in line with IGAD-ICPALD and international standards.

After the assessment, the officials noted that the Somali Livestock Quarantine and Inspection Centre has been built to modern specifications that align with global quarantine regulations, highlighting its potential role in strengthening Somalia’s livestock export value chain and enhancing confidence in international markets.
The delegation also commended the implementation of the project, describing it as beneficial not only for Somalia but for the wider Horn of Africa, particularly in livestock trade and animal health management.
Livestock remains Somalia’s leading export commodity, with most shipments destined for Gulf countries. The visit comes ahead of Eid al-Adha, a peak period for livestock exports to those markets.
