Kenya, Decemebr 15, 2025 - A family returning home from a wedding celebration has been devastated after twelve of its members were killed in a horrific road crash at Chabera on the Kisii–Kisumu highway on Sunday night. The tragedy unfolded when two trucks collided with a van ferrying the relatives back to Rangenyo village in West Mugirango, Nyamira County.
Ten people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The survivors were rushed to Nyamira County Referral Hospital, where medical teams continue to treat the injured. The journey that began as a joyful family outing ended in unthinkable loss, plunging the entire village into mourning.
The crash came less than 24 hours after another deadly accident at Ekerenyo on the Kisii–Kericho road, where eight people, including a child, lost their lives. That van was also carrying families travelling home. In just a single weekend, twenty people have died in Nyamira-linked accidents—most from related families heading back from social gatherings.
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo described the latest crash as heartbreaking and deeply troubling.“Yet again, our county has been thrown into mourning,” he said. “The rising number of accidents, especially during a period when people should be celebrating, is a serious concern—not only for Nyamira, but for the entire country.”

He urged national agencies to take immediate and decisive action to curb what he termed an escalating road safety crisis. The governor also extended condolences to the families and wished quick recovery to the injured.
The tragedies come against a backdrop of alarming national road statistics. According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), at least 4,458 people have died in road crashes between January and December 2025—already surpassing last year’s total of 4,311. Pedestrians remain the most affected, while hundreds of drivers and passengers have also perished in accidents involving private cars, matatus, and buses.
As investigations begin, families in Nyamira are left grappling with immense grief, asking how festive journeys meant to bring loved ones together could instead deliver such profound sorrow.
