Kenya, May 26, 2026 - The National Land Commission (NLC) has launched a ground verification exercise for 27 parcels of land hosting Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) projects in Turkana County as part of efforts to formalise ownership of public utility land.
The exercise, led by NLC Deputy Director of Land Administration Jacinta Gitau, seeks to verify the location, survey plans, land sizes, occupation status and Part Development Plans (PDPs) for the identified parcels before issuance of Letters of Allotment.
In a statement, the Commission said the exercise is aimed at ensuring “transparency, accuracy, stakeholder participation, and compliance with applicable land administration processes and procedures.”
“REREC is currently undertaking a comprehensive land formalization exercise for all parcels hosting its infrastructure and assets across the country,” the statement said.
According to NLC, the verification exercise is part of a broader initiative to regularise land ownership and secure legal documentation for land occupied by electricity and renewable energy infrastructure.
“The exercise underscores the commitment of both the National Land Commission and REREC towards securing public utility land, enhancing accountability in land administration, and supporting sustainable energy infrastructure development within Turkana County and across the country,” the Commission said.
Before commencing the field visits, the NLC team paid a courtesy call on Turkana County Chief Officer for Lands and Physical Planning Leah Losiru, who welcomed the initiative and urged the team to expedite the process.
The delegation also met Turkana County Commissioner Julius Kavita, who assured the team of adequate security during the exercise.
The verification exercise has so far covered sites in Turkana West Sub-County, including Kakuma and Letea REREC substations, as well as Nadapal, Napeililim and Lolupe in Turkana Central.
Also present during the exercise were NLC County Coordinator Mark Ewosit and REREC Lands Officer Martin Muriuki.
