UK , August 24 ,2026 - Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Manchester City midfielder Nico González after the two clubs reached a verbal agreement over a deal for the Spanish international, according to the latest reports.
The transfer is understood to be worth £47 million up front, with a further £3 million available in add-ons, taking the potential total package to £50 million. The agreement represents a major step toward González becoming a Newcastle player, although the transfer still needs to go through the formal documentation and final stages before it can be considered completed.
González has also given the green light to the move after developments accelerated overnight. The 24-year-old is reportedly prepared to join Newcastle and sees the opportunity to become an important player in the club's project.
The development comes after several days of negotiations between Newcastle and Manchester City. Newcastle had identified González as one of their leading midfield targets as they sought to strengthen an area of the squad that has undergone significant change this summer. Earlier reports confirmed that the Magpies had made contact with City and that the Premier League champions were open to discussing his departure.
The situation has changed quickly from González initially indicating that he wanted to remain at Manchester City. Earlier in August, reports stated that the midfielder was convinced he could establish himself at the Etihad Stadium. City, however, were increasingly willing to listen to offers, particularly as their squad underwent a significant midfield reshuffle.
González joined Manchester City from Porto in January 2025 for a reported £50 million. He signed a long-term contract running until 2029 and made 59 appearances for the club, scoring four goals.
Despite his versatility and technical qualities, González struggled to establish himself as an undisputed starter at City. His potential departure therefore represents a significant change in his career just 18 months after arriving in England.

For Newcastle, the transfer is particularly important because the club are rebuilding their midfield. The Magpies have already lost major players in that area, including Bruno Guimarães, who moved to Arsenal, while Sandro Tonali has also departed. Newcastle had therefore been exploring several midfield options before making González their leading target.
The Spaniard offers Newcastle versatility, physicality and the ability to operate in several midfield roles. His experience at Barcelona, Valencia, Porto and Manchester City also gives him a strong background despite being only 24.
Manchester City, meanwhile, are continuing a substantial midfield overhaul. Rodri has moved to Barcelona, Tijjani Reijnders has joined Al-Qadsiah and Bernardo Silva has departed for Real Madrid, while City are also pursuing new midfield reinforcements.
With the transfer now at the verbal-agreement stage and González reportedly ready to make the move, Newcastle are increasingly confident of completing the signing.
If the final formalities are completed, Nico González will become a key addition to Newcastle's midfield and another major piece of their rebuilding project, while Manchester City will recoup close to the £50 million they invested in the player in 2025.
