Kenya, April 9, 2026 - The Nairobi Metropolitan Region was the leading consumer of electricity in the country in the second half of 2025, accounting for almost half of the country’s total electric consumption.
According to a report by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, the region utilised 44.24 per cent of the country’s electricity, after using 2,627.44 Gigawatt-hour (GWh), up from 2,415.44 GWh in a similar period last year.
“Nairobi utilized 2,627.44 GWh up from 2,415.44 GWh in the half year ended December 2024, an increase of 8.78%. Nairobi region encompasses Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos, and Makueni counties,” the report stated.
Overall, national electricity consumption grew by 8.27 per cent from 5,484.54 GWh to 5,938.14 GWh, according to the authority.
This was largely driven by increased demand across most regions in the country, except the Coast region, which, despite ranking second in electricity consumption at 16.46 per cent, was the only region to record a decline.
According to the report, the region, which comprises Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Taita Taveta, and Tana River counties, utilized 977.90 GWh, which is a 1.04 percent decline from 988.21 GWh of electrical energy used in the region in a similar period the previous year.
The North Eastern Region, which includes Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Kitui, Thika, and parts of Machakos, used up 666.98 GWh, accounting for 11.23 percent of the country’s total energy consumption. This represented a 13.73 percent increase.
Nakuru, Narok, Nyandarua, Kericho, Bomet, Baringo, and Samburu counties, which form the Central Rift region, utilized 553.74 GWh during this period, accounting for 9.33 percent of the country’s energy consumption.
The Mount Kenya Region recorded a consumption of 389.52 GWh, contributing to 6.56 percent of the overall consumption, while the Western Region utilized 322.89 GWh, representing 5.43 percent of the total consumption.
The North Rift region utilised 276.69 GWh of electrical energy, up from 250.93 GWh utilised in a similar period in 2024, and the Southern Nyana Region had the lowest consumption at 123.38 GWh, utilising only 2.07 percent of the country’s total consumption.
The number of grid-connected customers increased by 182,195 to 10,216,952 during the period under review, according to the regulator.
"In the period under review, electricity generation was highest in December at 1,328.52 GWh, and lowest in September at 1,258.36 GWh. This is a notable improvement compared to a similar period in the previous year where the highest generation was 1,233.59 GWh in October 2024," EPRA said.
