Kenya, 2 November 2026 - Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi on Monday accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of undermining opposition unity, warning that fragmentation threatens the push to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
In a statement, Muturi said Gachagua’s insistence on fragmented political arrangement raised questions about his commitment to the collective presidential ambition of the leaders keen to stop Ruto's second term ambitions.
He cautioned that the approach risked creating the impression that Gachagua of Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) was preparing for post-election bargaining rather than prioritising State House.
“Mr Gachagua must understand one fundamental truth: No Kenyan President has ever been made by one community alone,” Muturi said.
The DP leader said a winning national coalition required compromise, maturity and strategic thinking, adding that no individual owns the United Opposition and no community has a monopoly on the presidency.
Political partnerships, he said, must be built on mutual respect, not ultimatums or supremacy contests.
Muturi also reminded Gachagua of his family’s own political history.
“His late brother, Nderitu Gachagua, won the gubernatorial contest against TNA, the political vehicle that produced President Uhuru Kenyatta, despite GNU supporting Uhuru,” he said referring to The National Alliance and Grand National Union political parties in the 2013 elections.
Ruto was Uhuru's runningmate. Nderitu, now deceased, won the gubernatorial race to become first Nyeri governor that year.
He argued that the episode showed political alliances are complex and no formation belongs to one individual.

He also questioned the assumption that three separate formations could automatically deliver the presidency, saying Kenya’s presidential politics could not be reduced to ethnic arithmetic, regional strongholds or individual bargaining power.
Muturi put the opposition on notice that it must decide whether it is building one national movement or creating “separate political kingdoms” whose leaders would negotiate their own interests after the elections.
“Is the objective to win the presidency or to control MPs, legislators and devolved units while sacrificing the bigger national ambition?” he asked.
Describing the Komboa Kenya project as “not child’s play”, Muturi said it demanded sacrifice, discipline and a genuine commitment to a common objective.
He said the DP party remains open to dialogue with those committed to constructive solutions but would not yield to mischief or intimidation.
“Kenya is bigger than any one politician,” he said.
