Somalia, 20 October 2025 — The Mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of Banadir, Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungab), has officially declared his candidacy for the upcoming Banadir Local Council elections scheduled for 30 November 2025.
Speaking on Sunday during the presentation of the provisional voter list, Mayor Mungab emphasized the importance of citizen participation and collaboration among all political stakeholders in the electoral process.
“I am the Mayor, and I want to be elected. I aim to maintain constructive relations with all parties participating in the local councils,” he said.
Mungab urged registered voters to collect their voter cards and participate actively, stressing that public involvement is crucial for building transparent and accountable local governance.
According to Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC), a total of 923,220 residents of Banadir have registered to vote in the one-person, one-vote elections. Banadir is currently the only region with a confirmed polling schedule.
The mayor’s announcement marks the official start of his campaign as political parties begin mobilizing support and preparing for what is expected to be a competitive season.
