Somalia, 9 April 2026 Authorities in Mogadishu have inaugurated the rehabilitated Siigaale water catchment, an initiative aimed at curbing chronic seasonal flooding in the Somali capital.
The Governor of Benadir and Mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein ‘Mungab', presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the site, which serves as a primary catchment point for runoff from seven of the city's districts.
"Today we are launching a strategic project that will play a major role in saving the lives and property of the capital’s residents," Mungab said in a statement on Thursday. He described the completion of the work, which began in late August 2025, as a visible step toward strengthening community security and livelihoods.

According to municipal officials, the project was executed by the Mogadishu Municipality to bolster urban resilience against volatile weather patterns. A second phase is scheduled to begin immediately, focusing on environmental sustainability, including landscaping and tree-planting to stabilize the area.
The rehabilitation was funded under the World Bank-backed Somalia Urban Resilience Project (SURP-II), a multi-million dollar initiative supported by international donors through the Somalia Multi-Partner Fund. The program focuses on climate-resilient engineering to mitigate the impact of flooding in the region.
