MOGADISHU (Dawan Africa) – The Mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of the Benadir Region, Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungab), held high-level talks on Monday with Sudan’s Ambassador to Somalia, Mr. Abdulrahman Khalil Afandi, focusing on advancing city-level cooperation between Mogadishu and Khartoum.
The meeting, held at the Oficio Governo, explored the possibility of twinning the two capitals. Both sides highlighted their shared experiences as cities that have endured civil wars and are navigating complex paths to recovery. These parallel challenges, they noted, create a strong foundation for collaboration in infrastructure development, public service delivery, and urban governance.
“The people of Somalia hold deep respect for the Sudanese nation. We believe Mogadishu and Khartoum can benefit greatly from each other’s experiences as we rebuild our capitals,” said Mayor Mungab.
He emphasized the importance of solidarity between the two cities, which are both in the process of rebuilding after years of violent conflict.
Ambassador Afandi expressed gratitude for the warm reception and presented a report on the Sudanese community residing in Mogadishu. Mayor Mungab pledged his support to facilitate their integration and promote knowledge-sharing between Sudanese professionals and Somali counterparts.
The meeting marks a potential step toward increased city-level cooperation between Mogadishu and Khartoum — grounded in a shared understanding of post-conflict urban recovery
