UK, August 9, 2026 - Marcus Rashford is set to return to Manchester United's first-team setup after his loan spell at Barcelona, with the England international now travelling with Michael Carrick's squad for the club's pre-season preparations.
Rashford's return marks a significant development in a transfer saga that appeared increasingly likely to end with the forward leaving his boyhood club permanently.
However, Barcelona opted against activating the reported purchase option in his loan agreement, meaning Rashford has returned to Manchester United with his future still unresolved.
According to the latest reports, Manchester United have decided to reintegrate Rashford into the first-team group under Carrick. ESPN reported that the 28-year-old is expected to rejoin the squad for the pre-season camp in Ireland, while The Times also reports that Rashford's return could give him an opportunity to rebuild his relationship with the club.
Rashford's Manchester United future has been uncertain since his relationship with former manager Ruben Amorim deteriorated.
The forward spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Aston Villa before moving to Barcelona for the 2025/26 season. His time in Spain proved productive, with Rashford making a strong impression during his loan spell and contributing 25 goals and assists as Barcelona won La Liga, according to The Times.
Barcelona had the opportunity to make the move permanent but ultimately decided against exercising the reported €30 million purchase option.
That decision left Manchester United with a difficult choice: attempt to sell Rashford, arrange another loan or bring him back into the squad.
The latest developments point toward the third option.
No. 14 shirt being considered#
One of the biggest talking points surrounding Rashford's return is his squad number.
Reports have claimed that Manchester United could hand Rashford the No. 14 shirt as part of his reintegration into the squad.
The number became available following the departures of players who previously occupied it, and Manchester Evening News identified No. 14 among the available squad numbers earlier in the summer.
A change from Rashford's familiar No. 10 would therefore represent a significant symbolic move.
A potential fresh start under Carrick#
The appointment of Michael Carrick has changed the circumstances surrounding Rashford's future.
Unlike the previous regime, Carrick now has the opportunity to assess Rashford from the beginning of a new campaign and determine whether the academy graduate can once again become an important member of the team.
Carrick has already confirmed that Rashford will be part of the travelling group, a clear indication that the forward is being given an opportunity to work with the first-team squad.

The situation is particularly interesting because Rashford has previously enjoyed some of the best football of his career at Manchester United.

The Times reports that there is currently no concrete interest from another club, with Rashford's wages also presenting a significant obstacle to a potential transfer.
That leaves Manchester United in a relatively unusual position.
The club would prefer to avoid another loan, but if no acceptable permanent offer arrives, keeping Rashford could become the most practical solution.
His return also gives Carrick an opportunity to evaluate him during pre-season before United make a final decision on his long-term role.
If Manchester United eventually confirm Rashford as the No. 14, the decision could carry more significance than simply changing the number on his shirt.
Rashford has worn the No. 10 shirt since the beginning of the 2018/19 season, following Zlatan Ibrahimovic's departure. The number became closely associated with the forward during his rise into one of United's most important attacking players.
Moving to No. 14 could therefore represent a symbolic reset.
Rather than immediately returning Rashford to his old role and status, United would be giving him a fresh starting point under a new manager.
It would also send a message that the club is prepared to give him another opportunity while maintaining flexibility over his future.
Rashford's return to the Manchester United squad means his future is no longer simply a transfer question.
