Kenya, 26 January 2026 - The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has officially kicked off the Annual Data Privacy Conference in Mombasa, highlighting significant milestones achieved since its establishment.
Speaking during a morning media breakfast held ahead of the conference, Data Protection Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, SC, MBS, outlined key accomplishments that demonstrate the office’s growing impact on data protection in Kenya.
Among the milestones highlighted was the expansion of the ODPC’s national footprint through the establishment of new regional offices and Huduma Centre desks across the country. The Commissioner also noted the launch of the ODPC Strategic Plan 2025–2029, which prioritizes stronger regulation, enhanced institutional capacity, and improved compliance.
The ODPC has registered over 15,000 data controllers and processors nationwide, significantly strengthening compliance with the Data Protection Act. Since the Act’s enactment, the office has handled 9,061 complaints, taking firm enforcement and dispute resolution actions to safeguard personal data.
Speaking on the conference theme, Kassait emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and collaboration in building trust in digital systems.
“Our theme this year, ‘Trust the Data, Drive the Future,’ reflects the need to prioritize data protection and foster confidence in digital systems. As we navigate an increasingly data-driven world, it is essential that individuals feel secure in how their personal information is collected, stored, and used. This theme underscores transparency, accountability, and collaboration among stakeholders to create a safer digital environment for everyone,” she said.

Earlier in the day, the ODPC engaged members of the Fourth Estate during the media breakfast, discussing key issues around data protection and digital trust. The session also highlighted the critical role of the media in promoting awareness and accountability in Kenya’s data ecosystem.
Among those attending the conference was Media Council of Kenya CEO David Omwoyo, MBS, alongside other stakeholders.
