Kenya, 27 October 2025 - Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced an increase in flight frequencies between Nairobi and Kisumu, following sustained travel demand even after the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County.
The national carrier said the surge in bookings began ahead of the week-long mourning period and has persisted as mourners, dignitaries, and organizations continue to visit Odinga’s family home in Opoda Farm.
“We’ve increased our flight frequency to Kisumu over the weekend to accommodate the high travel demand,” Kenya Airways confirmed in a statement.
The airline had earlier reported fully booked flights between 15 October and 20 October 2025, prompting the addition of extra daily flights on the Nairobi–Kisumu route.
According to flight data from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), passenger traffic to western Kenya doubled during the week leading up to Odinga’s burial, with the trend continuing due to post-burial visits.
In Kisumu, hotel bookings have remained high as groups and delegations travel to pay tribute.
“Hotels are doing okay,” said Mr Mike Macharia, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers, in a statement.
Tourism and hospitality stakeholders in the region say the influx has boosted local business, from transport operators to restaurants, offering a rare economic uplift to Kisumu and Siaya counties.
The surge comes amid growing visits to Odinga’s home, with local leaders, former cabinet members, and international guests visiting to express condolences.
Kenya Airways’ move to sustain additional flights into the coming weeks underscores the ongoing significance of the events surrounding Odinga’s farewell.
