Kenya, May 26, 2026 - The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has revealed plans to apply for electricity transmission and distribution licences for the proposed KenGen Green Energy Park project.
In a notice on Tuesday, KenGen’s Company Secretary and General Manager for Legal Affairs, Austin Ouko, said that it will table its application to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority on June 2, 2026.
If approved, the company will have the green light to undertake electric power transmission and distribution activities within the Green Energy Park project.
The company has assured that the granting of the licenses will not have any adverse effect on the public or local authorities, and other individuals within the areas of the undertaking.
Members of the public and other stakeholders who would like to oppose the move or make representations regarding the application have been given 30 days from the date of application to submit their concerns to EPRA.
“Printed copies of the application, the Licences once granted and of any other particulars required can be inspected by the public at the registered office of the Company at the Company Secretary's office KenGen Pension Plaza II, Kolobot Road, 10th Floor, KenGen Pension Plaza II, Kolobot Road, Parklands, P.O. Box 47936-00100 GPO, Nairobi,” the notice read.
The KenGen Green Energy Park is a 342-hectare industrial hub in Olkaria, Naivasha, which is designed to power industries with 100% renewable geothermal energy.
The park is categorized as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and it offers manufacturers, data centers, and eco-friendly businesses direct access to geothermal steam and reliable, low-cost electricity, targeting fully green, low-carbon industrialization.
The move comes at a time when more companies and entities are transitioning from the conventional power sources to more reliable and less costly energy sources such as geothermal and solar power.
In late April, Sameer Africa submitted its application to EPRA for an Electric Power Generation and Retail License to support the installation of a solar project at its Enterprise Road complex in Nairobi.
The company, which is a real estate investment company, said that the project will involve the installation of a 4 MVA self-consumption solar system at the complex, which it said will only be used to cater for on-site electricity needs without exporting power to the national grid.
Residents and other entities surrounding the premises were assured that the project would have no adverse effect on them.
