June 22, 2026 - Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel on Sunday evening repulsed an attempted attack by suspected Al-Shabaab militants on a security camp in Irresuki, Mandera Central Sub-County.
According to a police report recorded at Elwak Police Station, the incident occurred at about 8:10 p.m. when the militants launched a coordinated assault on the camp. The attackers are believed to have approached the facility under the cover of darkness, exploiting the remote terrain that characterises much of Mandera County.
Security officers stationed at the camp responded immediately, engaging the attackers in a sustained firefight and forcing them to retreat before they could breach the facility's perimeter. The rapid response prevented what could have been a significant security breach in a region that has seen repeated militant activity in recent months.
No casualties or injuries were reported among security personnel. Authorities had not established whether the attackers suffered any casualties during the exchange, though blood trails discovered during subsequent sweeps suggested at least some of the militants may have been wounded.
Following the incident, security agencies launched a comprehensive clearance operation in the area to assess the situation, secure the perimeter, and rule out any remaining threats. Multi-agency teams comprising KDF soldiers, National Police Service officers, and National Intelligence Service personnel were deployed to cordon off the area and pursue the retreating militants.

Officials said a detailed report would be released upon completion of the operation, adding that reinforcements had been dispatched to bolster security at the camp and surrounding installations.
The attempted attack underscores persistent security challenges along Kenya's northeastern frontier, where suspected Al-Shabaab militants continue to stage sporadic attacks targeting security installations, public infrastructure, and civilians. The Somalia-based militant group has exploited the vast, semi-arid terrain along the Kenya-Somalia border to launch hit-and-run raids, despite years of counter-terrorism operations by Kenyan and allied forces.
Security agencies have maintained heightened surveillance and operations in the region as part of ongoing efforts to counter cross-border militant activities and enhance public safety. Local administrators have also intensified community engagement programmes aimed at encouraging residents to share intelligence on suspicious movements, which security officials credit with preventing several planned attacks in recent weeks.
