DJIBOUTI, 6 August 2026 – Djibouti police have arrested a man accused of using artificial intelligence (AI) to create fraudulent WAAFI mobile payment confirmations, authorities said.
The suspect is believed to have targeted shop owners, particularly sellers of electronic goods and clothing in the PK12 area, by presenting fake payment receipts to obtain products without making actual payments.
Police said at least six traders fell victim to the scheme, with multiple complaints filed at the Hodan police station.

Following an investigation, authorities arrested the suspect while he was allegedly attempting to carry out another fraudulent transaction similar to previous incidents.
Two other individuals were also detained on suspicion of benefiting from or collaborating with the suspect. Police said the two were allegedly involved in receiving goods obtained through the fraudulent scheme.
The three suspects were referred to the prosecutor’s office and later ordered to remain in custody at Gabode Civil Prison pending further investigations and legal proceedings.
