Somalia, 20 October 2025 — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi "Irro" held a crucial meeting today with the leadership of three political parties — Waddani, Kulmiye, and Kaah — to discuss the political situation, upcoming elections and efforts to maintain peace in the Erigavo region.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, marked the second round of consultations between President Irro and party leaders since he assumed office in late 2024.
According to a statement from the presidential office discussion focused on three main areas: May 2026 parliamentary and local elections, progress in the Erigavo peace initiatve and updates on the President’s recent diplomatic visits to the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.
President Irro briefed the political parties on the progress of the Erigavo peace initiative, emphasizing that efforts to promote peace in the region are proceeding well. He also reiterated the importance of democracy and consultation as the foundation of Somaliland’s stability, urging the parties to continue their cooperation to enhance peace and development across Somaliland.
Waddani Party, which is currently in power, welcomed the discussions, underscoring the importance of inter-party collaboration to ensure progress.
Kulmiye, the opposition party, described the meeting as productive, with discussions focusing on voter registration and ongoing efforts to maintain peace in Erigavo.
Kaah Party also expressed support for national peace efforts, emphasizing the importance of holding the National Assembly elections on time, as scheduled for May 2026.
The meeting comes amid ongoing discussions about the role of Erigavo in Somaliland’s peacebuilding efforts. The region has previously experienced violence and conflict, highlighting the significance of stable governance for its future.
