Kenya, 26 May 2026 - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed claims by political actors alleging plans to manipulate the 2027 General Election, describing the statements as “unacceptable, reckless, and entirely baseless.”
In a press release issued on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, the Commission said it was responding with “grave concern” to recent utterances suggesting that some individuals intend to influence the presidential election through extra-legal mechanisms.
“These utterances, which have elicited considerable disquiet within the electoral environment, pose a real risk of distorting public perception of Kenya’s democratic processes,” the IEBC stated.
“The utterances are clearly intended to instill fear, mislead the public and erode confidence in the integrity of the electoral system.”
The Commission emphasized that the mandate to conduct and supervise elections rests solely with the IEBC under Article 88 of the Constitution of Kenya, and cannot be usurped by any individual, institution, or political actor. It warned against assertions that the IEBC is weak, compromised, or susceptible to external influence, calling such claims “false, misleading and deeply disrespectful.”
IEBC noted that it has not declared any elections for 2027, and there has been no official publication of the 2027 General Election that would warrant the current wave of “premature and irresponsible utterances.” The Commission said it will engage relevant authorities for appropriate action.
Citing the Supreme Court Petition No. 23 (E026) of 2022 by Hon. Sabina Chege, the IEBC clarified that the Electoral Code of Conduct under Article 84 of the Constitution and Section 110 of the Elections Act is not presently operational, as the Commission’s jurisdiction under the Code applies only during the election period.
The Commission urged Kenyans to disregard and refrain from amplifying the claims, and called on political leaders to refrain from making unverified or inflammatory statements on vote-rigging.
IEBC also encouraged eligible citizens to take part in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration at constituency offices, Huduma Centres, and its Customer Care Centre at Anniversary Towers, Nairobi, ahead of the 2027 polls.
“The Commission reiterates its unwavering commitment to upholding its constitutional mandate. IEBC assures the public and all stakeholders that it will continue to safeguard its independence and impartiality,” the statement read.
