Mogadishu — Hormuud Telecom pledged support for Hormuud University's new Institute of Indonesia and Africa Studies (IIIAS) to advance research and academic ties between Somalia and Indonesia.
Bashir Abdullahi Sahal, Deputy CEO of Hormuud Telecom, speaking at the launch ceremony, said IIIAS is an important initiative that will make a significant contribution to higher education, research, innovation, and knowledge exchange between Somalia, Indonesia, and Africa more broadly.
Bashir commended the leadership of Hormuud University, its lecturers, students, and the entire university community, praising their efforts in establishing the new institute.
“On behalf of the great company Hormuud Telecom, its senior management, staff, and affiliated institutions, we pledge to stand by you and provide support and funding,” said Bashir.
He noted that Hormuud University was born out of a genuine need to produce young Somalis with the knowledge and skills required by the labor market, particularly in technology, telecommunications, and modern sciences.
Bashir added that the university has graduated thousands of students and expanded into various faculties and academic programs, reflecting its visible contribution to the advancement of higher education in the country.

The Deputy CEO of Hormuud Telecom said IIIAS represents a new step forward in research and postgraduate studies, which he described as the foundation of development in modern nations.
“Postgraduate studies are what distinguish nations. Developed countries advanced through research, and we hope this institute will become an important step toward meaningful research,” he said.
Bashir also spoke about the historical and cultural relationship between Somalia and Indonesia, noting that the two nations also share deep commercial ties.
Bashir further encouraged the new institute to produce practical research that responds to the needs of society, citing the potential for such studies to be linked to local production, business, technical development, and innovation.
Hormuud Telecom said it would consider the achievements of the new institute as a shared success for the university, the company, and the Somali community as a whole.
