Addis Ababa, June 29, 2026 — Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met in Addis Ababa on Monday to discuss trade, security and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The meeting, which took place at Ethiopia’s National Palace, was part of President Mohamud’s working visit to Ethiopia. The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation between Somalia and Ethiopia, particularly in the areas of security, the economy, diplomacy and strategic regional affairs.
Security issues were a key focus of the talks, as both Somalia and Ethiopia play important roles in efforts to stabilize the region. Somalia remains engaged in the fight against Al-Shabaab and Daesh, while Ethiopia has long been part of African Union efforts to support security in Somalia.

The meeting also comes at a time when the two countries are pursuing diplomatic efforts to rebuild trust following earlier tensions over regional issues, particularly the maritime dispute and Ethiopia’s engagement with Somaliland. The Ankara Declaration, facilitated by the Government of Türkiye, opened a new path for dialogue and cooperation between the two sides.
During the meeting, President Mohamud congratulated Prime Minister Ahmed on the victory of his party in Ethiopia’s elections, wishing Ethiopians continued peace, development and prosperity.
Although no new agreement was officially announced following the meeting, both sides expressed their commitment to continuing dialogue, strengthening cooperation and working toward the shared interests of Somalia, Ethiopia and the wider region.
