Somalia, 15 June 2026 – Hamas has criticised Somaliland’s reported plan to open an embassy in Jerusalem, describing the move as a “political mistake” and a violation of international laws and norms.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Palestinian group condemned a visit to Israel by Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, during which he is expected to open a Somaliland embassy in Jerusalem.
Hamas said it rejected the visit and Irro’s meetings with Israeli officials, whom it accused of responsibility for violations against Palestinians.
“The opening of an embassy by the Somaliland administration in Jerusalem is a political mistake and a violation of all international laws and norms,” Hamas said in the statement.

It said the move also ignored what it called the unified Arab and Muslim position on Jerusalem.
Hamas described the step as dangerous and called for its reversal. It urged the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and other concerned parties to act against any move that could undermine the general position on the Palestinian issue.
The Hamas statement came after Israeli President Isaac Herzog welcomed Irro, saying the visit reflected opportunities for cooperation between the two sides.
