Kenya, 3 May 2026 - Gor Mahia took a massive step toward reclaiming the FKF Premier League title after a dramatic late victory over Kakamega Homeboyz, secured through an own goal in the dying moments of the match.
In a tense encounter played at Mumias Sports Complex, Gor Mahia were made to work hard for all three points in a match that looked destined to end in frustration. However, a late defensive error from Homeboyz defender Peter Thiong’o turned the game on its head, handing the league leaders a crucial win that extends their lead at the top of the table to nine points.
From the opening stages, Gor Mahia asserted themselves as the more dominant side, controlling possession and pushing forward with intent. Their attacking play showed purpose, but Kakamega Homeboyz remained disciplined, keeping their defensive shape and limiting clear-cut chances. The match developed into a tactical battle, with Gor Mahia probing and Homeboyz absorbing pressure while looking for opportunities to break forward.
As the game progressed, frustration began to creep in for Gor Mahia. Despite their territorial dominance, the final pass often lacked precision, and the Homeboyz defense held firm under repeated pressure. The longer the match remained goalless, the more belief grew within the Homeboyz side that they could walk away with a valuable point.
But title-chasing teams often find a way, and Gor Mahia did exactly that when it mattered most.
In the closing stages, sustained pressure inside the penalty area forced a moment of panic in the Homeboyz defense. Attempting to clear the danger, Peter Thiong’o inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, breaking the deadlock most dramatically. The goal sparked immediate celebrations from the Gor Mahia players and fans, who understood the significance of the moment in the context of the title race.
It was not a goal crafted through brilliance, but one created through persistence, a reflection of Gor Mahia’s mentality this season. Even on a day when attacking fluency was not at its best, they continued to push, apply pressure, and ultimately forced the mistake that decided the match.

The result was a painful one for Kakamega Homeboyz. Their defensive organization and discipline had nearly earned them a crucial point against the league leaders, but a single lapse in concentration proved costly. Matches like these highlight the fine margins in football, where one moment can undo an otherwise solid performance.
For Gor Mahia, however, the victory carries enormous significance. Moving nine points clear at this stage of the season places them firmly in control of the title race. It not only strengthens their position mathematically but also sends a strong psychological message to their closest challengers.
This is the hallmark of champions, the ability to win even when performances are not perfect. Gor Mahia have consistently demonstrated resilience, patience, and belief, qualities that are often decisive in long league campaigns.
As the season approaches its final stretch, the equation is becoming clearer. With a significant lead and momentum on their side, Gor Mahia are now in a commanding position to secure the title.
