Kenya, April 13, 2026 - Google has expanded Gmail end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to Android and iOS for Gmail client-side encryption (CSE) users.
According to the company, the update allows users to read, compose, and manage fully encrypted emails directly within the Gmail mobile app, without requiring additional applications or separate mail portals.
Google said users with a Gmail E2EE licence can send encrypted messages to any recipient, regardless of the type of email service they use.
“With Gmail E2EE, users can securely engage with sensitive data from anywhere on their mobile devices while ensuring compliance with organisational data protection requirements,” the company said.
Encrypted messages will appear in recipients’ inboxes as standard email threads.
Recipients who do not use the Gmail app can still read and reply to messages through a web browser, without installing additional software.
To use the feature, administrators must enable Android and iOS clients through the CSE admin console.
End users can activate encryption by selecting the lock icon, choosing additional encryption, and composing their message as usual.

Google said the update is designed for a range of users, including small businesses, large enterprises, and public sector organisations handling sensitive information.
The rollout is available on both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, but is currently limited to Enterprise Plus users with Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-ons.
The update comes a day after Google introduced new features in its Chrome browser to improve productivity.
These include vertical tabs, allowing users to move tabs from the top of the browser to a side panel for easier navigation.
Users can enable this feature by right-clicking on a Chrome window and selecting “Show Tabs Vertically”.
Google also updated its reading mode to improve the experience for users engaging with long-form content or conducting research online.
