United States, May 05, 2026 - Google has expanded its data transfer capabilities, allowing users to more easily move personal media from institutional accounts to private ones as they exit school-issued accounts.
In the update, the tech giant said that its Takeout Transfer tool will include Google Photos, which will allow students to migrate their photos, videos, and albums from school-issued Workspace accounts to personal Google accounts.
Google has indicated that users will now be required to visit the Takeout Transfer page, where they can access a new toggle specifically for Google Photos alongside the existing options for Drive and Gmail.
The new transfer capability is available for Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus domains, according to Google.
“If you are getting ready to leave your university or school district, you no longer have to resort to clunky, manual downloads to save the pictures and videos tied to your educational account. Google is officially expanding its Google Takeout Transfer tool to include Google Photos,” the company said.
However, Google has noted that users should ensure that they have enough storage space in their personal account before executing the transfer.

Users with large collections of high-resolution images and videos may need to upgrade their storage plans through Google One to ensure that their personal accounts accommodate them.
In its guidance for IT administrators managing Google Workspace for education domains, the company has said that the photo transfer feature will be turned off by default.
Administrators will be required to enable it at the Organizational Unit (OU) level to allow your students to transfer their data out.
The tech giant has also revealed that it will introduce enhanced Photos management and bulk-deletion capabilities within the admin console later this year.
The new tools will enable institutions to track data transfer and free up their storage space.
