U.S June 26, 2026 - Germany's perfect start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an abrupt end on Thursday night, but Julian Nagelsmann's side still secured top spot in Group E despite suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Ecuador at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
Having already guaranteed first place before kick-off with victories over Curaçao and Ivory Coast, Germany entered their final group match under little pressure. Ecuador, meanwhile, needed a victory to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive, and they produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament to book their place in the Round of 32.
The four-time world champions made the perfect start.
Just two minutes into the match, Leroy Sané opened his account at the tournament, finishing calmly after excellent work from Florian Wirtz to hand Germany an early 1-0 lead. The quick opener appeared to set the stage for another dominant German performance.
However, Ecuador had other plans.
Rather than allowing Germany to dictate proceedings, Ecuador responded almost immediately.
In the ninth minute, Nilson Angulo produced a superb strike to level the match, silencing the German supporters and breathing new life into Ecuador's qualification hopes. The equaliser transformed the contest, with Ecuador growing in confidence while Germany struggled to regain control of midfield.
Led by Moisés Caicedo, Ecuador matched Germany physically and technically, creating several dangerous opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half.
As the second half progressed, Ecuador sensed that a famous victory was within reach.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest inside the penalty area to convert the winning goal from close range, sparking jubilant celebrations among Ecuador's players and supporters.

Germany pushed forward in search of an equaliser during the closing stages, but Ecuador defended resolutely to record one of the greatest victories in the nation's World Cup history.
Despite the defeat, Germany's earlier victories over Curaçao (7-1) and Ivory Coast (2-1) ensured they remained top of Group E with six points.
Ivory Coast also finished on six points following their 2-0 victory over Curaçao, but Germany claimed first place thanks to a superior goal difference. Ecuador finished third with four points but advanced to the knockout stage as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams, while Curaçao were eliminated.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann refused to overreact after the defeat, insisting the result would serve as an important learning experience ahead of the knockout rounds.
The German manager acknowledged that his team lost control after taking the early lead and admitted improvements would be necessary if they were to challenge for a fifth World Cup title. He also noted that Germany had already secured qualification before the match and was focused on preparing for the Round of 32.
For Ecuador, the victory represented far more than three points.
After opening their campaign with a defeat to Ivory Coast and a draw against Curaçao, Sebastián Beccacece's side faced elimination unless they defeated the group winners. They responded with courage and determination, overcoming an early setback to secure one of the tournament's biggest surprises.
Following the match, Beccacece described the comeback as Ecuador's greatest-ever World Cup victory, praising his players for believing in themselves despite their difficult start to the tournament.
Although Germany's unbeaten run came to an end, the defeat does little to diminish their ambitions. As Group E winners, Die Mannschaft now advance to the Round of 32, where they will face one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
