June 18, 2026 - Efforts to reopen the long-closed Hillo Gold Mines in Marsabit County have gained momentum following the commencement of geological and mineral exploration activities in Dabel, Governor Mohamud Ali has announced.
The governor disclosed the development after receiving a delegation from the State Department for Mining, accompanied by officials from the Geological Office and representatives of the Marsabit County Government, who briefed him on the ongoing exploration exercise.
According to Governor Ali, the exercise follows a directive issued by President William Ruto during a recent meeting at State House with leaders and a delegation from Marsabit County. During the meeting, the President instructed the Ministry of Mining to fast-track processes leading to the reopening of the Hillo Gold Mines.
The governor said the State Department for Mining has already launched geological mapping, geophysical surveys and geochemical sampling in Dabel to assess the area's mineral potential and establish a scientific basis for reopening the mines.
"The exercise is expected to run for approximately 26 days and will culminate in a comprehensive Geological Status Report and an actionable roadmap to guide the reopening process," he said.
Officials informed the governor that the assessment will help determine the depth, extent and commercial viability of mineral deposits in the area. The technical team is also reviewing existing geological data while undertaking additional evaluations to establish the full resource potential.
Governor Ali further revealed that the Ministry of Mining, the Regional Geological Office, the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), county officials and other stakeholders are refining an action plan that will be submitted to the County Commissioner, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Mining and county leadership within the next two weeks.
He pledged the county government's full support for the exercise and stressed the need for broad stakeholder engagement to ensure the process is inclusive and transparent.
The governor emphasized the importance of involving communities in Moyale Sub-County, particularly those in Golbo Ward, as well as residents across Marsabit County, in discussions surrounding the planned reopening.
