30 May 2026 - Leaders have raised concern over rising insecurity after a young man of Somali descent with U.S. connections was attacked and killed by knife-wielding gang in Garissa.
The leaders called for decisive actions against the gangs that they said are carrying out brazen attacks even in broad daylight, robbing and killing civilians.
They insisted that the security agencies must act to contain the criminals.
Garissa Woman Representative Amina 'Udgoon' Siyat, while condoling with family of the deceased, said the town is increasingly becoming a place of mourning because of rising insecurity, and "this trend cannot continue, as innocent people constantly live in fear."
"I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the tragic killing of a young man in Garissa following another senseless act of violence linked to criminal gangs. May the soul of the deceased rest in peace, and may God grant strength and comfort to the grieving family during this painful time.
The lawmaker said the criminal activities involving gangs who have infiltrated the boda boda sector must be dealt with firmly and within the law.
“There should be no maslaha or negotiation when it comes to criminals and those terroriring innocent residents. Anyone engaging in criminal acts must face justice, and any leader or individual who attempts to shield criminals or interfere with security operations should also be held accountable,” she said in a statement.
The Woman Rep said all suspects must be lawfully arrested, arraigned in court, and if found guilty, serve the punishment prescribed by law.
Udgoon said locals must stand together against violence, protect one another and support efforts aimed at restoring peace, safety and normalcy in our town.
Faiza Sadik, a Woman Representative aspirant, also said its not the first time these gangs have killed young boys and girls.
