Somalia, 22 June 2026 – Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye launched the Balsho Project to improve basic services and strengthen local government across Galmudug.
The project is expected to support local administration, public service delivery, community resilience, reconciliation and state-building at the district level, Galmudug State House said.
The Bulsho Project is a Somalia government-led programme under the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, supported by the World Bank. The programme is aimed at strengthening community and local institutions, improving district-level service delivery, supporting social cohesion and resilience, and promoting participatory planning in local areas.
The launch ceremony was held at the Galmudug presidential palace and attended by Galmudug ministers, the Director General of Somalia’s Ministry of Interior, Galgaduud regional officials and members of the public.
Kariye said the project reflected Somalia’s federal system by helping bring government services closer to local communities.

“This project truly reflects the decentralisation of government and public needs,” Kariye said, adding that it was designed to reach districts and smaller local areas.
He said districts would identify their own priorities rather than having needs decided for them from the top. describing the approach as one that would strengthen both local services and community capacity.
Kariye said the project would also cover areas liberated from militant control through stabilisation plans, while peaceful districts and larger towns would receive support based on their needs.
He urged Galmudug’s Interior Ministry, local government officials and district commissioners to implement the project properly and ensure that communities benefit from it.
The Galmudug President said the project was part of wider efforts to strengthen governance, security and local development in the state.
