Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – The African Union Commission (AUC) has confirmed the deaths of five Ugandan peacekeepers following a helicopter crash in Mogadishu on Wednesday. The helicopter, operated by Ugandan troops under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), crashed near Aden Abdulle International Airport in the Somali capital.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, the government and people of Uganda, and the entire AUSSOM community.
“The loss of these peacekeepers is heartbreaking, and I extend my deepest condolences to their families and all those affected,” said Youssouf. “I also wish a swift and full recovery to those injured, including the civilians affected by this incident.”
AUSSOM confirmed that three of the eight individuals aboard the helicopter were rescued and rushed to the AUSSOM Level II hospital in Mogadishu for medical treatment. The helicopter had taken off from Balidoogle airbase in the Lower Shabelle region before crashing near the airport. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash, although the exact reasons remain unclear.
The AUC Chairperson emphasized the African Union’s continued support for Somalia’s efforts to restore peace and stability, noting that the sacrifice of these peacekeepers would not be in vain.
“This incident highlights the risks and sacrifices made by peacekeeping forces working in Somalia to ensure stability and security. We will continue our efforts to support Somalia in restoring peace and prosperity,” Youssouf added.
The Somali government also expressed its condolences, with the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism extending sympathy to the government and people of Uganda.
Ugandan forces are part of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, playing a crucial role in the ongoing fight against the Al-Shabaab militant group.
