July 12, 2026 - Former Balambala MP Abdikadir Omar Aden has withdrawn from the 2027 parliamentary race, citing the need to preserve family unity and community cohesion in a negotiated political arrangement that is beginning to shape electoral contests in Garissa County.
Dr Abdikadir announced the decision on Sunday after what he described as extensive consultations with family members, elders and other key stakeholders.
His withdrawal clears the way for his maternal uncle, Garissa Township MP Major (Rtd) Dekow Mohamed Barrow, who is expected to seek re-election in 2027 under the family's consensus arrangement.
Speaking after the meeting ,Dr Abdikadir said the decision, though difficult, was necessary to avoid political competition within the family.
"After extensive consultations with family, elders and key stakeholders, I made the decision to withdraw my candidature for the 2027 Balambala MP seat," he said.
"This difficult decision was driven by a desire to maintain community harmony and family unity. It became clear that it would be counterproductive for both myself and my maternal uncle, Major (Rtd) Dekow, to vie simultaneously. In the interest of cohesion, it makes complete sense for me to step down and refocus my energies."
Dr Abdikadir thanked residents for the opportunity to serve as Balambala MP between 2013 and 2017 before representing Kenya at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) from 2017 to 2022.
He said he would remain active in community development and continue serving the country in other capacities.
"I am deeply grateful for the honour of serving as your MP and representing Kenya at the East African Legislative Assembly. I will remain fully active in our community's development and stand ready to serve our great nation, Kenya, in other capacities where I can add value," he said.
The announcement followed a consultative meeting of members of the Ugaar family of the larger Yahye clan in Garissa on Sunday, where leaders discussed preparations for the 2027 General Election.
In a separate statement, Garissa Township MP Major (Rtd) Dekow welcomed the decision by Dr Abdikadir and former Garissa County Assembly Speaker Ismail Ali Abdullahi to abandon their political ambitions, describing the move as an act of selflessness that would strengthen unity.
"I extend my sincere gratitude to Hon. Dr Abdikadir Omar Aden and Hon. Ismail Ali Abdullahi for selflessly shelving their ambitions for the greater good of our family. Their sacrifice and statesmanship have strengthened our unity and allowed us to fully focus on the Garissa Township seat," Mr Dekow said.
The development underscores the continued influence of negotiated democracy in Garissa politics, where elders and clan leaders often broker consensus on candidates to minimise divisive electoral contests.
The model has been widely practised in parts of northern Kenya, with supporters arguing that it promotes cohesion and reduces the cost of campaigns, while critics contend that it limits political competition and voters' freedom of choice.
