Somalia, 26 May 2026 – The European Union has called on Somali political leaders to quickly resume dialogue to find a way forward on the country’s election process, amid continuing political tensions between the federal government and the opposition.
Speaking to Dawan Media during an interview on Tuesday, EU Ambassador to Somalia Francesca Di Mauro said the European Union is engaging with all sides and encouraging dialogue as the main path for resolving political disputes.
“We don’t take a position for one over the other. What we promote is dialogue,” Ambassador Di Mauro said, adding that the EU believes political disputes should be addressed through talks and concrete outcomes.
The ambassador said discussions between the government, opposition figures and some federal member states had already started before her arrival in Somalia last September, and that the EU’s role has been to maintain contact with all sides.
She said the EU wants political actors to participate in dialogue once it is announced and to work toward practical results.

“I would like to use this opportunity to again restate that we really hope that dialogue will resume very quickly in order to identify a way forward on elections in Somalia,” she told Dawan Media.
Her remarks come as Somalia faces continued debate over the future electoral model, the role of political stakeholders, and the need for consensus between the federal government, opposition leaders and federal member states.
The EU ambassador said Brussels’ approach is based on supporting dialogue rather than backing one political side, describing the European Union as an actor that promotes peaceful settlement of disputes.
