Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – Ethiopia’s ambassador to Somalia Suleiman Dedefo has criticized the Arab League over its position regarding Ethiopia’s Nile River water projects, questioning whether the organization represents all Arab nations or primarily serves Egypt’s interests.
In a statement posted on his X platform (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the ambassador asked why the Arab League focuses persistently on Ethiopia’s water utilization plans while failing to address crises in member states facing insecurity, instability, displacement, and hunger caused by ongoing conflicts.
“Is the Arab League really a League of Arab Nations, or the League for execution of Egypt’s anti-Ethiopian policy?” the ambassador asked. He added that it is unclear on what legal or moral grounds the League can threaten Ethiopia on behalf of another country and instruct Ethiopia to seek permission to use its own natural resources.
The diplomat’s remarks underline growing frustration in Addis Ababa over what Ethiopia views as a biased regional approach to the Nile dispute, amid continuing tensions with Egypt over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
“The League has badly exposed itself that it doesn’t represent the rest of Arab nations,” the ambassador said, emphasizing that Ethiopia will continue to pursue its national development projects in accordance with international law and sovereign rights.
