Addis Ababa – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia prepared more than 8 billion seedlings for the 2026 nationwide tree-planting campaign under the Green Legacy Initiative.
In a post shared on his Facebook page, Abiy said the seedlings are ready for planting and called on Ethiopians across the country to actively participate in the annual campaign. He noted that the initiative is aimed at combating climate change, reversing environmental degradation, and restoring ecosystems.
Launched in 2019, the Green Legacy Initiative has become one of the world's largest tree-planting programs. The Ethiopian government says more than 40 billion trees have been planted since the campaign began, with a target of reaching at least 50 billion trees by 2026.

According to official Green Legacy figures, Ethiopia planted approximately 7.5 billion trees in 2024. This year, authorities plan to exceed that number by planting more than 8 billion seedlings nationwide.
Ethiopia is expected to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) in 2027, a platform Addis Ababa hopes to use to showcase its achievements in reforestation and environmental conservation.
