Addis Ababa (Dawan Africa) – Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on Tuesday, marking a major milestone in the country’s energy and infrastructure development.
The ceremony was attended by high-level leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto, Djibouti President Ismael Omar Guelleh, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
Ethiopia’s top officials were also present, including the Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives Tagesse Chafo, the Speaker of the Federation House of Representatives Agenahu Tesheger, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, former Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, regional administrators, and cabinet ministers.
The inauguration further included the presence of the Ethiopian military leadership, led by Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, alongside representatives from regional and international organizations.
Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the dam as a symbol of national pride and regional development, emphasizing its potential to generate hydroelectric power, strengthen Ethiopia’s economy, and support energy access across the Horn of Africa.
