Ethiopia, 22 December 2025 Ethiopia’s National Election Council held talks with representatives of political parties, including the ruling party, to review ongoing preparations for the country’s 2026 general elections, as part of a strategy aimed at ensuring free, fair, and impartial polls.
According to the council, the meeting reviewed a draft electoral timetable and discussed a range of observations raised by political parties. Among the key issues addressed was the decision not to require candidates to submit supporting signatures, as well as the importance of sustaining political dialogue among all stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Participating parties welcomed the steps taken by the council, saying they contribute to creating a more equitable electoral environment.

The Election Council officials reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing an inclusive political platform that enables the participation of all political forces. They stressed that discussions would continue on issues related to the conduct of the elections, including security and logistical arrangements.
Political parties were also urged to submit lists of any executive officials whose neutrality may be in question, along with documentation related to party budget allocations, as part of broader efforts to enhance transparency and confidence in the electoral process.
Regarding the Tigray region, the council said it is preparing to hold elections there in line with other regions, noting that it has recently held consultations with the region’s interim administration and expects positive progress on the matter in the coming period.
