ADDIS ABABA, Dawan Africa — Ethiopian authorities have arrested 82 individuals suspected of being affiliated with the Daesh (ISIS) terror group, according to the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) on Tuesday.
The NISS reported that those detained had allegedly received training in Somalia's Puntland region before being deployed to various parts of Ethiopia.
The operation, which spanned Addis Ababa and several regions, including Oromia, Amhara, Somali, and Harari, led to arrests in key cities such as Adama, Jimma, Shashemene, and Jigjiga.
Authorities indicated that some of the suspects were involved in activities such as intelligence gathering, logistics, and financing operations. Local communities reportedly played a significant role in the arrests, and investigations are ongoing.
Puntland, a region in northern Somalia, has faced escalating threats from the terror group, which has sought to establish a foothold in Somalia amid the ongoing conflict with Al-Shabaab. Puntland has launched multiple operations to counter ISIS militants, with international partnerships supporting its efforts to prevent the group's expansion in the Horn of Africa.
