Addis Ababa (Dawan Africa) – The Government of Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of military interference, territorial violations, and coordination with armed groups in the northern Tigray region, according to an official diplomatic letter addressed to the United States.
Dawan Africa has independently obtained and verified the authenticity of the diplomatic letter, dated 20 June 2025, and sent by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to U.S. Secretary of State Marco A. Rubio.
In the letter, Ethiopia stated:
“These hostile acts constitute a flagrant violation of international law and further exacerbate the fragile peace and security situation in the Horn of Africa.”
The letter accuses Eritrea of banning Ethiopian Airlines flights, freezing the airline’s assets and funds, disrupting telecommunication links, and supporting armed groups operating inside Ethiopia.
The Ministry cited previous efforts to normalize relations, referencing the 2018 Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship, and mentioned Ethiopia’s continued protection of Eritrean refugees and asylum seekers.
The letter further states:
“The Government of Eritrea, which had seen the conflict in northern Ethiopia as an opportunity to weaken Ethiopia, began to adopt an increasingly hostile posture.”
It also highlights what it describes as “unrelenting cooperation and coordination between a faction of the TPLF, the Eritrean Government and other armed groups under their tutelage, to undertake major offensive operations during the upcoming rainy season.”
“Even when faced with these violations of sovereignty, repeated military activity, and interference in the country’s internal affairs, the Government of Ethiopia has exercised maximum restraint,” the letter said.
Ethiopia called on the United States and the international community to intervene:
“We count on your support to end Eritrean provocation and aggression.”
