Ethiopia, 18 April 2026 Ethiopia is stepping up preparations to host the COP32 climate summit, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed chairing a high-level meeting to review planning.
The Prime Minister met with the national committee organizing the summit, where they reviewed progress, identified challenges, and flagged areas needing faster action. The government said it aims to ensure all efforts align fully with the country’s national strategy on climate change and sustainable development.
In a message shared on his social media account, Ahmed said the country is committed to delivering a high-level global event.
“Our goal is clear. By strengthening strong partnerships, a shared vision, and sustained collective efforts, we aim to host this global event at the highest standard,” he said.
During the meeting, officials also agreed on a unified direction for the next phase, focusing on accelerating remaining tasks and ensuring Ethiopia successfully delivers the major international summit.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the world’s largest global gathering on climate change, bringing together countries that are part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The summit, scheduled to take place next year, will focus on:
• Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
• Implementing global agreements such as the Paris Agreement
• Supporting climate-vulnerable countries, particularly in Africa
• Advancing climate finance and green technology
Ethiopia is positioning itself as a key African hub for global climate diplomacy, viewing the hosting of COP32 as an opportunity to boost its international standing, attract green investment, and strengthen global partnerships.
