ASMARA (Dawan Africa) — Eritrea says it is continuing efforts to strengthen the role of women in national development and social resilience following a seminar held for female members of the Eritrean Defence Forces, according to the Ministry of Information.
The seminar, held at Denden camp on May 15, was led by Tekea Tesfamicael, President of the National Union of Eritrean Women, and focused on “The Role of Eritrean Women in Resilience and Development.”
Tekea Tesfamicael said the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) made significant efforts to advance gender equality during the country’s independence struggle, leading to the establishment of the National Union of Eritrean Women in 1979.

She said women were provided with educational, political and vocational training opportunities during the liberation struggle, enabling them to participate in various sectors of the movement, including military leadership positions.
The official also said the Eritrean government introduced legal reforms after independence by amending laws considered discriminatory against women and adopting legislation aimed at promoting equality and women’s rights.
Tekea Tesfamicael added that the National Union of Eritrean Women is expanding its activities both inside and outside Eritrea and called on women to strengthen their participation in social affairs and national development efforts.
