Ethiopia, 4 November 2025 — The East Africa Parliamentary Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (EAPA-FSN) has concluded its regional meeting in Addis Ababa, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring inhabitants have a right to adequate food and a dignified life free from hunger and malnutrition.
The meeting brought together parliamentarians from Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda, alongside representatives of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the IGAD Parliamentary Union, to discuss legal foundations for the right to food and the transformation of food systems across the region toward greater sustainability and equity.
FAO Subregional Coordinator Frei Zimudzi stressed that the rising burden of hunger and malnutrition in East Africa demands urgent legislative and policy action.
“Parliamentarians play a vital role in enacting laws, monitoring government policies, and allocating resources to guarantee people’s right to food,” she said.
EAPA-FSN Chairperson Adan Yusuf called for a change in narrative from hunger and poverty to resilience and food security. He emphasized that a strong legislative framework is key to protecting and promoting this fundamental human right.
The meeting also examined model food security and nutrition laws, the right to social protection, agroecological approaches, and the legal challenges linked to climate change and responsible agricultural investment.
