Djibouti, 2 January 2026 The President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, has granted amnesty to 194 prisoners held in the central prison of Gabode. The surprise action was taken to mark the New Year, with the government planning to make presidential pardons part of the country’s humanitarian policies.
The amnesty which took effect on New Year's eve saw 92 prisoners released from Gabode on Thursday. Among the released prisoners were 16 foreign nationals, who will be deported to their respective home countries in accordance with the country's legal procedures.

Additionally, 102 other prisoners had their sentences reduced by four months. This step is part of the welcoming of the New Year 2026.
